Bobby | two decades of partnership & support

For over twenty years, I’ve worked closely with Grammy-winning artist, songwriter, performer, and conductor Bobby McFerrin whenever questions or challenges came up in his home studio. My guidance has helped Bobby transition through every major phase of studio development — keeping his systems current, reliable, and intuitive, so he can focus fully on his creative work.

For more than twenty years, I’ve relied on Alex whenever I’ve needed help in my home studio. Technology has changed so much over the years, and Alex has been there through every transition — helping me keep my systems current, reliable, and intuitive so I can stay focused on making music instead of wrestling with equipment.

Back in the 1990s, my touring engineer set me up with an ADAT 8-track digital recorder and a small Mackie mixer for home recordings. Eventually, I upgraded to a larger digital board and stand-alone recorder, but by the early 2000s it was clear that the future was computer-based recording. Alex helped me make that leap. He took the time to understand my workflow and creative goals, guided me through the process of choosing the right gear, set it all up, and taught me how to use it confidently. He even migrated years of older recordings from the earlier systems so I could keep developing those ideas without missing a beat.

About ten years later, I realized I had a problem— too many choices. Between a thousand sounds on my keyboard, various virtual instruments, and plug-ins, it was easy to lose inspiration while scrolling through options. Alex helped me streamline everything. He simplified my setup and configured my computer so that when I powered it on, it was instantly ready to record. That made it effortless to capture ideas the moment they appeared.

Because I often spent time away from the studio while touring, Alex created simple cheat sheets that made it easy to jump back into recording whenever I returned home. And now that I’m on the west coast, it’s great to know he can continue helping remotely whenever I have questions. Knowing I can always rely on him gives me a lot of peace of mind — and the freedom to stay creative without worrying about the technology.

Over the years, Alex’s support has extended beyond the studio itself. He’s helped me and my family with everything from setting up new computers and iPhones to building a solid network backup system that keeps our music, recordings, and photos safely archived.

His support has been invaluable to me.

Dave | Leveling-Up My Understanding & Results

We’ve done everything from experimenting with mic placements on my drum kit to breaking down mixes to see what’s really working. Alex also helped me make smart gear choices— figuring out what’s worth the money and what’s just hype. This has saved me from a lot of expensive trial and error.

I actually met Alex when he was looking for an electrician to talk about wiring power for a home studio project. What started as a quick conversation about electrical work turned into a massive “geek-out” session, We talked about recording gear, studio acoustics, and the best ways to keep the creative juices flowing while also honoring our respective gear-acquisition-syndromes.

Since that fateful first meeting, Alex has become an incredible resource and trusted advisor for me in my own home studio. He’s helped me refine my recording workflow in Logic Pro, dial in the integration of my audio interface and outboard gear, and has helped me use effect plug-ins more intentionally. He’s also been a sounding board for my mix decisions and someone I can rely upon to give honest, actionable feedback.

Alex also helped me make smart gear choices— figuring out what’s worth the money and what’s just hype. This has saved me from a lot of expensive trial and error. Throughout the work we’ve done, he’s shared that my early / raw results were already quite good, and that I have a solid ear for what I’m doing. That meant a lot, and it helped me learn to trust my gut ear.

Since we started working together, my confidence and results have both gone way up. My mixes sound tighter and more professional, and I’ve even started taking on recording and mixing projects for other artists — including TrashMan and some friends in my circle. Alex even joined me at Gradwell House Recording Studio to assist on my band’s latest EP sessions, which was such a big help and certainly helped improve the final results.

Alex has a rare mix of technical know-how, musical sensibility, and an ability to teach in ways that really stick. He doesn’t just fix problems — he helps you understand why something works, so you can trust your own ears and make better creative decisions.

Adam | Major Progress, Right From The Start

I wanted to improve the quality of my recordings, simplify my process, and get more efficient in the studio. From our very first meeting, things started to click. My recordings immediately sounded better, my workflow made sense, and for the first time, I had a clear plan to move forward.

As a longtime drummer, I built a sound-isolated drum room in my basement a few years back — finally giving myself a space where I could leave the mics up and record whenever inspiration hit. I started with some decent gear and a basic interface, made a few recordings, and was instantly hooked. Like many of us, that led to buying more gear, more software, and more “solutions.”

Before long, I had stuff — but not a system. Every new session felt like starting from scratch. I’d spend hours on YouTube and forums trying to figure out the “right way” to do things, learning a ton but never feeling like I was getting closer to what actually worked for me.

That’s when I called Alex. I wanted to improve the quality of my recordings, simplify my process, and get more efficient in the studio. From our very first meeting, things started to click. My recordings immediately sounded better, my workflow made sense, and for the first time, I had a clear plan to move forward.

Alex had me start with goals — not gear lists. He helped me define what I actually wanted to do in my studio and then showed me what was possible with the tools I already had. We mapped out smart, realistic next steps and discussed how to grow my setup over time.

Here’s where Alex proved to be worth his weight in vintage gear: his advice wasn’t about buying more; it was about using better. He pointed out capabilities in my existing setup I’d completely overlooked, and helped me understand how to think through my recording process rather than just copy someone else’s online tutorial. In a few hours with Alex, I gained more clarity and progress than I would have after weeks of sifting through random videos and forum threads.

Together, we walked through several of my typical recording situations. He helped me dial in settings, explore sonic options, and build custom session templates tailored specifically to my workflow. These weren’t “perfect mix” templates from some YouTuber’s mailing list — they were my templates, for my studio. They’ve become a foundation I can build on every time I hit record.

As part of our early sessions, Alex also introduced me to the importance of having a real backup strategy. Up until then, my approach had been a mix of manual copies and wishful thinking. Alex set me up with a proper automated backup system that quietly handled everything for me. Almost a year later, that preparation paid off in a big way when the custom Windows PC my son had built for me completely died. Instead of panic, I had peace of mind. We retrieved every session and file effortlessly, and I decided it was the right time to transition to a Mac-based studio. Alex made that switch completely painless — from setup and data migration to personalized tutorials and workflow tweaks. What could have been a nightmare ended up being a seamless, confidence-building upgrade.

Now, every time I go into my studio, I know exactly what to focus on. Some days that means recording and practicing; other times, it’s refining my setup with the steps Alex outlined in his follow-up notes. Since working with him, I’ve made smart, goal-driven gear upgrades, and my setup now feels streamlined, professional, and future-proof.

Could I have eventually figured all this out on my own? Maybe — but it would have taken much longer, cost me far more in wasted purchases, and left me second-guessing my choices. The real value Alex provided is confidence. I walk into my studio, flip everything on, and I know exactly what to do.
